Still in the hospital for transfusions

We're back in the blogosphere after Jewish New Year, which as Gary wrote is traditionally a time for reflection, taking stock of what we're doing with our lives.  We spent it together in the hospital.  Incredibly great luck that Gary was initially given a double room just for him, so I stayed two nights on a real bed, like a hotel!

In our little room, we ate fresh New York State apples dipped, as is the custom, in honey.  Delicious honey, I must add, harvested and bottled by hand in Eastern Ontario by apiarist friends Natalie and Gordon, whose beautiful honey product won First Prize in a honey contest!

Gary remains admitted to Columbia-Presbyterian, receiving daily blood and platelet transfusions. Applause and blessings to his friend MAUREEN in Connecticut for donating blood in tribute to Gary at her local hospital!  Maureen, thank you for translating your fond wishes for Gary into positive action that will surely save someone's life!  DONATING blood or platelets = SAVING LIVES!

Huge thanks to Gary's friend DONNA M. from Long Island who visited Gary in hospital on Saturday afternoon.  Equally huge thanks to LORINDA, friend from my ballet class, who made the long trek uptown to Columbia to visit on Saturday evening.   On both ocassions, we forgot to take out the camera - bad on us.  :-(

But we did take photos on Sunday...

On Sunday afternoon, we enjoyed a lovely visit from my sister SUSIE and her daughter RUTHIE.  They had just finished the Komen "Run Breast Cancer Out of Town" walk in Central Park. Way to go!!!
Susie, Ruthie, Gary, and me.   To reduce risk of infection, all visitors to Gary's room must wear these super-sized smocks over their street clothes.

On the right is Rosalie, the Physician's Assistant assigned to Gary's case this weekend.  By coincidence, she grew up just a few miles from my sister's family!

The views from Gary's hospital room are nothing short of spectacular.
Having slept overnight, I caught the dawn light illuminating the George Washington Bridge.

Here is a view southward, down the Hudson River from the hospital.
Lest you think everything near the hospital is beautiful...
Behold the hospital's monster parking garage!

As always, your personal visits (and messages, mail, calls) are great medicine!  Gary is expected to be discharged home tomorrow or Tuesday.  And, as soon as he's out, the radiation treatments can resume.

  2. Beautiful pictures. I love your posts, Gary and Brian, so wonderful to read.
I donated platelets a few weeks ago and will do so again in two weeks. Just so people know -- it is a very easy process and can be done every two weeks because you receive all your own blood back -- all through the same IV, which I can't figure out at all!
    Be well, Gary.
    Take care.
Happy New Year, with love to you both.

    1. Joanie,
Thanks for donating the platelets, and for letting everyone know how easy it is. A lot of people aren't aware that you can donate platelets. I've been going through platelets like crazy, with nosebleeds for days on end. Thanks again!

    1. Hi Laura!

Here are two ways to find a blood donor location near you. Both are national, non-profit organizations. You can phone, or type in your zip code for list of blood donation sites in your area:

      - 1-800-US-BLOOD, or 1-800-872-5663 for "America's Blood Centers"
      www.americasblood.org

      - 1-800-RED CROSS, or 1-800-733-2767 www.redcrossblood.org. You can book an appointment online.

      Way to go!
