Day 18 news

Today is Day 18 in hospital for Gary.  Although it's been a long haul, he is improving and also getting additional input into his case from doctors on the lymphoma side.   During the day, various doctors roam the floor, looking after their patients, and sometimes they are asked to stop in for a consultation, to provide information that is fed back to the medical team.  That's what happened today.  The type of leukemia that Gary has is also considered a subset of non-Hodgkins lymphoma.  Columbia is a leader in lymphoma treatment.  Therefore the idea is to probe for additional treatment options that would put Gary back on the transplant track, or possibly make him eligible for newly-emerging drug therapies that could be even more helpful.

Although no "blood" transfusions were needed today, Gary did receive two bags of platelet transfusions.  One of the bags was from a donor in Oklahoma City!   Each bag is stamped with the location of the center that collected the donation, and we take a moment with the nurse to "thank" the anonymous person who donated their blood or platelets.  They will never know whose life they saved, and we can never know who they are to thank them.  It's amazing.

Also amazing...

is Gary's effervescent friend of long-standing, Meryl!   She visited this evening and brought a lot of fun and life to the room!

She played a kooky word game with us where you ask for nouns, verbs, adverbs, and adjectives to insert randomly into a zany short story.  Somebody better "comment" and tell me what it's called, as I forgot!

  1. You will be pleased to know I have a blood donation appt. next Thursday at our local clinic. I will donate in honour of Gary! I am trying to get back on the regular three-month rotation, as they have a clinic in Alexandria every three months which is very handy for me. I had to stop for a long time because of anemia and other issues but I should be fine now. :)

I'm glad he has such excellent care there, and I hope he will soon be home. xoxo

  2. Gary,

I am really glad to hear about the new Docs and new ideas on your treatment, and I so hope that you get to go home soon, so that you can walk outside and smell the fall air and feel how crisp and beautiful it is.

    Hugs,
    Ella
